about

Years ago there was a pub on the
Thames in Richmond called 'The Three Pigeons' -
then in the horrible days of yuppies and Thatcher
they changed it to 'The Raj' and plastered it with
pictures of elephants and men in turbans. My younger
brother Pete and I would go down there on summer's
evenings to sit out by the river in the hope of meeting
girls - we didn't.

lyrics

THE RAJ

So like the autumn leaves that die alone
Are we whose loves the winter winds have blown
Through happiness and pain till all the birds have flown

Ah but to hell with love these girls will never learn
Let's go down to the Raj and drink until we burn
Till our minds and bodies go their separate ways
Till you are Saint Peter and I am Philip Jeays

So like the summertimes that fade away
Are we who have just dying plants to say
We ever once went mad and gave our hearts away

Ah but to hell with love these girls are all too thick
Let's go down to the Raj and drink until we're sick
Till our minds and bodies go their separate ways
Till you are Peter the Great and I am Philip Jeays

So like migrating birds that fly as one
To find a land of everlasting sun
Are we who search to sing that song we never sung

Ah but to hell with love these girls are far too sly
Let's go down to the Raj and drink until we die
Till our minds and bodies go their separate ways
Till you are Speakeasy Pete and I am Philip Jeays

So like the sea that rides towards the shore
On horses bleached and frightened by the roar
Are we who run to love and run forevermore

Ah but enough of that these girls aren't all the same
Let's go down to the Raj and fall in love again
Till our minds and bodies go their separate ways
Till you are my brother Peter and I am Philip Jeays
